Jonathan Marsh, Director of Mashup Technologies for WSO2, continues development of a podcast statistics mashup, augmenting it with an ongoing history of the podcast download count. Shows how code can be periodically executed to monitor changes, and an XML structure representing the history to be built up over time. Demonstrates generating, importing and using Javascript stubs to compose the Web scraping service with an external storage service. Annotations for operation “safety” are explored, including their effect on the HTTP binding in exposing the service RESTfully.

Jonathan Marsh, Director of Mashup Technologies for WSO2, begins development of a podcast statistics mashup, showing in this episode how to scrape a Web page, extract information from the page, and expose it as a Web service. Demonstrates the basics of the scraping configuration language for acquiring the page and converting it to XML, the use of the Firebug extension for Firefox to examine the structure of the page, and the navigation of the resulting XML using E4X navigation capabilities. Also demonstrates annotations for enumerated types and numbers, including showing their effect on generating a useful and accurate WSDL complete with SOAP 1.1, SOAP 1.2, and HTTP bindings.

WSO2 Mashup Server Screencast: "Hello, World!"

Jonathan Marsh, Director of Mashup Technologies for WSO2, demonstrates how to create a simple hello-world Web service using only the WSO2 Mashup Server and Notepad. A simple Javascript function is deployed as a Web service, WSDL and other metadata is automatically generated, and then the service is tested using the Mashup Server’s “try-it” page. The service also shows how to quickly construct XML using the E4X Javascript extensions, and how to apply simple annotations documenting the operations and declaring parameter types.
