Web 2.0 is evolving, shifting control from centralized information sources (represented in Web 1.0 only as Web sites) to the end user. Web services are an essential part of providing information in a presentation-free, highly re-usable form, allowing the transformation of an information source into a service to be used how and when the customer wants it. This month we'd like to highlight two more data points tracking WSO2's advancing vision of "Web Services Everywhere."
In this issue
At OSCON 2008 in Portland, we expanded the interoperability work that we first demonstrated in June at Microsoft TechEd, which Sanjiva told you about last month. The original StockTrader 2.0 application, written in Microsoft .NET, was an SOA application consisting of several different components connected with secured Web services. WSO2 has implemented these application components in Java, PHP, and now extended to Spring, Ruby, Perl and Python. The result: an SOA application that can dynamically mix and match components written in any of these languages. This extension of Web service creation into popular scripting platforms helps bring Web services technologies to more places than ever before. These components are available for download at http://wso2.org/interop/stocktrader.
Another big announcement this month was the release of the WSO2 Mashup Server 1.5 product. By exposing simple Javascript functions as Web service operations, with rich metadata, rich clients, templates for developing Google gadgets, WS-* and REST bindings, WSO2 is bringing Web services to the Web developer community. More details on this release are available below in the "Featured Product" section.
Featured product
A little Javascript knowledge, a little markup knowledge, and you can create simple Web services in minutes. The 1.5 release includes features that make this simplicity practical within enterprise environments. First is configurable WS-Security on each service (authentication, signing, encryption). Secondly is integrated Data Services, allowing a data source such as a relational database, an Excel spreadsheet, or a CSV file to be exposed as a service by completing a wizard. The release also includes support for building Google gadgets powered by the Mashup services, extending Web Service technologies into a popular portal technology. Downloads Page | Project Home Page
